In Haarlem, Visser & Smit Bouw is constructing a new climate-neutral train hall for NS Train Modernisation. In the new hall, both old and new trains will be maintained and refurbished. Saan ensures that all materials are placed in the right location.
Steel structures, roof panels, wall panels, partitions, installations, and concrete pouring — Saan takes care of it all for this project. We are working with various cranes: 60-ton, 120-ton, and a 150-ton crane. At the end of March 2025, the channel plates were transported through the building using an electric tractor.
The old hall that stood on this site could not be adapted for the maintenance of old and new trains and therefore had to be replaced. The old hall was dismantled in a circular manner, the floor was cleaned and new tracks were laid. Construction started in 2023, and the new hall is scheduled to be operational in 2026.
‘Postage stamp’ construction site
The new train hall will be an impressive building with an open character and lots of glass. The hall is 200 metres long and 11 metres high and has 4 tracks for damage, repair and overhaul work. In addition, there is an office for approximately 180 employees.
The construction is extra special because the building site is the size of a postage stamp, so good construction logistics are important. The new building is connected to existing buildings that are still in operation.
